A+ BBB Rated America's Largest Wholesale Auto Dealer Licensing Company — Across All 50 States 1 (972) 359-3976

Using Your Dealer License

Getting licensed is just the beginning. Here's how smart dealers use their wholesale license to build real businesses — buying right, selling profitably, and scaling from there.

Attending Dealer-Only Auctions

With your dealer license in hand, you can register at any dealer-only wholesale auction in the country. The two largest national networks are Manheim and ADESA, each with dozens of physical locations plus online bidding platforms.

At these auctions, vehicles are sold by rental car companies, fleet operators, banks (repo inventory), new car dealers (trade-ins), and other dealers. Prices are wholesale — meaning significantly below what you'd pay at retail.

Getting Set Up at Auctions

  • Bring your dealer license certificate and a government-issued ID
  • Complete each auction's dealer registration (one-time, usually free)
  • Some auctions require a bank letter or floor plan credit line for large purchases
  • Online platforms (Manheim.com, OpenLane) let you bid from anywhere

Buying Vehicles the Right Way

The most successful dealers follow a disciplined buying strategy. Here's how to approach the market.

01

Know Your Market

Research what vehicles are selling in your area and at what price. Tools like Manheim Market Report, Black Book, and NADA give you wholesale valuations before you bid.

02

Set a Maximum Bid

Before you walk into an auction, know the maximum you'll pay for each vehicle. Factor in auction fees (typically $150–$400 per car), transport costs, and your target margin.

03

Inspect Before You Buy

Auction vehicles are sold as-is. Most auctions have an inspection lane — run the vehicle through the OBD port, check for frame damage, and do a walk-around. Condition reports (CRs) help when buying online.

04

Start with What You Know

Begin with vehicle types you understand — domestic trucks, economy sedans, whatever you're familiar with. Specialty vehicles (exotics, commercial trucks) require more market knowledge.

05

Track Your Inventory

Every car you buy has a cost basis. Track your purchase price, fees, reconditioning, and floor plan interest to know exactly what each vehicle needs to sell for to be profitable.

06

Build Dealer Relationships

Some of the best deals come direct from retail dealers who want to move trade-ins fast. Build relationships with local dealers — they'll often sell wholesale before they run a vehicle through auction.

Where Wholesale Dealers Sell

Back Through Auction

Buy a vehicle, recondition it if needed, and sell it at auction to another dealer. Simple wholesaling — the backbone of many profitable dealer businesses.

Direct to Retail Dealers

Call retail lots and offer your inventory directly. Many dealers prefer buying wholesale from known suppliers — it saves them auction fees and time. A few strong dealer relationships can move your inventory quickly.

Export Markets

License holders can export vehicles internationally. Markets in West Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East have strong demand for US-spec vehicles. Many USDL clients build entire export businesses on this channel.

Online Dealer Platforms

Platforms like ACV Auctions, Dealer-to-Dealer (D2D), and Manheim's online marketplace connect wholesale dealers nationally. List vehicles or buy from your computer — no need to be physically present.

Making the Most of Your Dealer Plates

Your wholesale dealer license comes with dealer plates — one of the most practical benefits. Here's what you can do with them:

  • Drive inventory vehicles — any car in your inventory can be driven on dealer plates without individual registration
  • Test drives — take vehicles to a mechanic or for buyer test drives without titling first
  • Transport vehicles — move cars between locations, auctions, or to buyers
  • Demo vehicles — show potential buyers vehicles on your lot or at their location

Each state sets the number of dealer plates you can have at once and the rules around their use. Your USDL specialist will walk you through your specific state's rules.
