Driving the Dream Ep. 6: Doug Kurzynski on Turning a Wholesale License Into a $15M Retail Operation
In Episode 6 of Driving the Dream, we sit down with Doug Kurzynski, US Dealer Licensing’s newest Licensing Specialist and territory lead for Texas. Doug’s own path from Marine Corps veteran to dealership owner is exactly the kind of story he now helps other entrepreneurs write for themselves — and it starts with a wholesale dealer license.
From the Marine Corps to a $15 Million Dealership
Doug’s route into the car business did not start in a showroom. After leaving the Marine Corps, he took a logistics job making $40,000 a year, then moved into automotive retail as a salesperson. From there, he worked his way up: sales manager, finance manager, general manager.
That climb gave him a front-row seat to how dealerships actually operate. Eventually, it also gave him the confidence to bet on himself.
“One day had the idea, hey, you know, I’ve learned this business. I can do this. And went with a wholesale dealer license that turned into a retail operation that was bringing in 15 million in revenue per year.”
Doug started with a wholesale dealer license — the same starting point available to any entrepreneur today — and grew it into a full retail dealership generating $15 million a year. It is a clear example of how a wholesale license is not just an entry point for flipping cars at auction; for the right operator, it can be the foundation of a much bigger business.
Ownership as the American Dream
When asked what the American Dream means to him, Doug points straight to ownership.
“It would be ownership of your own business, kind of taking control of your own path as an entrepreneur because it’s hard to rely on people these days… I like that my success is based off of the effort and perseverance that I personally have.”
That mindset is why Doug is drawn to helping new entrepreneurs get into dealership and wholesale operations. Unlike a nine-to-five, he says, the car business rewards people directly for the effort they put in — and he has lived that trajectory firsthand, from a $40,000 logistics job to running a multimillion-dollar dealership.
Bringing a Built-In Network to the Texas Market
As US Dealer Licensing’s newest specialist covering Texas, Doug is focused on one of the company’s largest and most diverse markets. His plan is not to start from scratch: he is bringing years of relationships across the auto industry with him.
“It’s showing them the network that I’ve already established. I know so many people in this auto industry… to be able to open doors for people to be able to show them, these are the best practices.”
Doug also points to Texas’s local immigrant communities as a big part of his focus — entrepreneurs with strong business instincts and a drive to build something of their own, which is exactly the audience a Texas wholesale dealer license is built for. A wholesale license allows licensed dealers to buy and sell vehicles through dealer-only auctions and other dealers; it does not permit sales directly to the public.
Direct Guidance From Someone Who’s Done It
What sets Doug apart on the USDL team is that he is not just explaining a process he has read about — he has personally built a dealership from a wholesale license to an eight-figure retail operation. That experience shapes how he works with clients: direct guidance, fast execution, and no pressure or jargon, whether someone is licensing their first wholesale operation or thinking bigger, the way Doug once did.
